Most sensible drivers have little desire to drive after sunset. This is explained by the fact that most accidents and collisions with pedestrians are observed precisely at night, and the percentage of the probability of a head-on collision at night increases several times. But today there is a new "weapon" that can significantly reduce the risk of driving at night - the High Beam Assist system, which promises to be a panacea for every driver forced to drive at night.

What is High Beam Assist System

High Beam Assist is an automatic light switching system. The use of a high-resolution camera and its competent combination with truly unique software made it possible to automatically switch low / high beam. This system optimizes the use of headlights as much as possible, maintains illumination depending on the specific situation on the road.

The latest technology of this kind makes it possible to achieve a truly ideal light distribution, depending on each traffic situation. At the same time, if the car "sees" the car in front, then the range of the high beam will automatically be limited both in width and in range. Interestingly, in this case it does not matter at all whether it will be an oncoming car or a passing one.

How High Beam Assist works

An intelligent car system called High Beam Assist includes a special "camera on a chip" that detects not only the level of ambient light intensity, but also analyzes the movement of all those objects that fall within its range. This system decides absolutely independently when exactly it is necessary to turn on the low beam or, on the contrary, switch to the high beam - it switches the illumination to the low beam from the far one in automatic mode when it detects an oncoming / passing vehicle.

The camera of this system is built, as a rule, in the body of the rear-view mirror of a car and can also darken the reflective surface, thereby providing the driver with protection from being blinded by the headlights of the car that is coming from behind. That is, speaking briefly about the principles of High Beam Assist, it can be said that the LED headlight optics used in this system have the best performance when driving at night. The electronics, which analyzes the picture from this high-resolution camera, recognize cars with the headlights on. After all this, the system can switch to high / low beam in automatic mode.

Who first invented High Beam Assist

The developer of this unique system is an American company called "Gentex" - the technology itself is called "SmartBeam". The developers of this technology claim that the newest generation of this technology, which is expected to be delivered this fall, makes High Beam Assist even smarter. For example, in the new version, the "High Beam Assist" system can more accurately recognize the rear lights of a car, as well as distinguish the headlights on those cars that are in motion.

What cars are High Beam Assist used on?

Today High Beam Assist is installed in many vehicles. For example, there is it on the new Opel Corsa 2015 onwards, as well as on the Nissan Qashqai 2014 onwards, Range Rover Sport, etc. And from this autumn, all models of BMW cars of the fifth, sixth and seventh series, which are equipped with xenon headlights, can also be ordered with this adaptive lighting system.

In addition, from next spring, Mercedes says its new models will also use this technology. It is recognized by experts all over the world as a really serious "weapon" against dangerous movement at night. It should be noted that even if "Mercedes" 100% plans to introduce this technology into its cars in the spring, then it is quite logical to expect similar decisions in the near future from other major players in the modern automotive world market.

Some of the main benefits of High Beam Assist

The most important advantage of using this system is to increase traffic safety at night. It should be noted that unlike other systems in use today that simply switch from high beam to low beam, this new technology is adaptive, because it distributes the light flows depending on the specific situation on the road. This quality of the High Beam Assist system is undoubtedly its undeniable advantage, because provides the ability to change the light range by 65 m - 300 m, without causing any harm to the eyes of oncoming drivers.
