In the article you will learn about the rules for diagnosing steering, as well as about the steering column adjustment mechanism.

The modern steering system of domestic passenger cars of the VAZ brand consists of 3 main components:

  • steering column with steering wheel;
  • steering gear;
  • steering drive.

The steering columns can be one-piece, with one steering shaft, or composite, which consist of an intermediate propeller shaft. Passive safety elements are included in the steering column mechanism, which deform during impact and increase injury safety. In turn, the steering drives include a pair of steering rods, together with articulated joints. The pendulum arm is an element of the steering drive, provided that there is a worm-gear steering mechanism.

Troubleshooting and diagnostics in steering

If you regularly carry out small diagnostic work, you can assess in time what state the steering is in and take appropriate measures, predicting a future breakdown. Diagnostics is carried out to determine the place where there are backlashes. First of all, it is necessary to conduct an external inspection of the system components in the steering and all parts, using a flyover or a viewing ditch in the following order:

  1. First of all, you need to check how the rod ends move along the axis of the fingers.
  2. Check how the clamps of the adjusting clutches are tightened on the side rods.
  3. See if there is no play in the pendulum arm.
  4. Check the condition of the rubber protective covers on the ball joints of the steering rods.
  5. Check for oil leaks.
  6. Check how the steering column is secured.
  7. See the amount of free play at the steering wheel. This defect is the most common one. The amount of free play should not exceed 5 degrees.

Steering column adjustment mechanism

In order to adjust the steering column on a VAZ 2110 car, you must perform the following operations:

1. At the very beginning it is necessary to remove the steering column covers.

2. If the steering column cannot be fixed in the desired position, it is necessary to turn the lever so that the columns are securely fixed and only then remove the retaining ring.

3. Remove the lever from the studs on the adjusting sleeve.

4. Next, it is necessary to install the lever on the spokes of the adjusting sleeve so that its location is parallel to the steering column. Then we install the retaining ring, and then the steering column covers.

5. Check the fixation on the steering column. In the case when the lever rests against the casing, you need to rearrange it lower.

6. If the steering column does not move up when the lever is turned to the lower position, check the take-off springs. Broken or stretched springs must be replaced.
